Chapter 1: An Unexpected Invitation
I was sprawled across my bed, earbuds blasting some gritty indie track, when the faint murmur of voices seeped through the thin walls of our modest apartment. My mom, Svetlana—or Sveta, as everyone calls her—and her best friend Lena were at it again, sipping tea and dissecting the mundane dramas of their lives in the kitchen. At eighteen, I’d learned to tune them out, but every now and then, a burst of laughter or a sharp quip would snag my attention. Today, though, I was lost in something else—a dusty family photo album I’d stumbled upon while rummaging through my closet.
There I was, flipping through faded snapshots of beach trips and awkward birthday parties, when my door creaked open. I yanked out an earbud, startled, as Sveta and Lena leaned against the frame, teacups in hand, their eyes glinting with mischief.
'Well, well, what’s this? My son, the historian?' Sveta teased, her light blonde hair catching the afternoon sun streaming through my window. She’s 36, wiry and sharp-tongued, with a smirk that could cut glass. 'Are you actually getting nostalgic, or did you just miss my face that much?'
I rolled my eyes, shutting the album with a thud. 'Just killing time, Mom. You two sounded like a daytime soap out there. Thought I’d find something less dramatic to focus on.'
Lena, 33 and dark-haired with a sly grin, stepped closer, her gaze darting to the album. 'Oh, come on, let’s see. Bet there’s some gold in there. Got any embarrassing shots of Sveta in a bikini?' She winked at me, her tone dripping with playful challenge. Her presence always had a certain edge, like she knew exactly how to push buttons without crossing lines—yet.
I snorted, holding the album out of reach. 'Plenty. But I’m not about to betray family secrets for a cheap laugh. You’ll have to bribe me with something better than tea.'
Sveta arched a brow, crossing her arms. 'Is that so? Careful, kiddo, I’ve got dirt on you too. Remember that time you tried to ‘cook’ for me and nearly burned the kitchen down?' She laughed, a sound that was equal parts warmth and menace. 'Anyway, we came to drag you out of your cave. Tea’s hot, and we’re bored of talking about laundry. Join us.'
I hesitated, glancing between them. There was something in the air, a crackle of energy I couldn’t quite place. Maybe it was the way Lena’s eyes lingered on me a second too long, or how Sveta’s casual stance seemed almost too deliberate. I shrugged, playing it cool. 'Fine. But only if you promise not to grill me about college again.'
Lena smirked, stepping aside to let me pass. 'No promises, handsome. We’ve got to keep you on your toes somehow.'
As we moved to the kitchen, their banter flowed around me, sharp and quick, like a game of verbal ping-pong. Sveta poured me a cup, her fingers brushing mine with a fleeting warmth. 'So, what’s really on your mind, huh? You’ve got that look—like you’re plotting something.'
I grinned, sipping the tea. 'Maybe I am. Or maybe I’m just wondering how two grown women can gossip for hours and not run out of steam.'
Lena leaned across the table, her dark eyes locking with mine. 'Oh, sweetie, you’ve got no idea how much steam we’ve got. Stick around, and you might learn a thing or two.' Her voice dipped, teasing, and I felt a sudden heat creep up my neck.
Sveta caught the exchange, her lips twitching. 'Lena, behave. You’ll scare him off before I get to embarrass him properly.' But her tone wasn’t scolding—it was conspiratorial, like she was in on some unspoken joke.
The room seemed to shrink, the air thickening with something I couldn’t name. My pulse quickened as Lena’s foot nudged mine under the table, a subtle, deliberate graze. I met her gaze, and there it was—a challenge, raw and unapologetic. Sveta’s hand rested on my shoulder, light but firm, as she leaned in to whisper, 'You’re not a kid anymore, are you? Maybe it’s time we stop treating you like one.'
My breath hitched, the tension coiling tight in my chest. Whatever this was, it was teetering on the edge of something dangerous, something I hadn’t expected when I’d opened that damn album. And as their laughter mingled with the heat of their nearness, I knew I was about to dive headfirst into waters way deeper than I’d ever swam before.
