Chapter 1: Sparks in the Shadows
The forest was a cathedral of whispers, ancient pines stretching toward a twilight sky bruised with violet and gold. Lena Voss, a wildlife photographer with a penchant for danger, adjusted the strap of her camera, her sharp green eyes scanning the undergrowth. She wasn’t here for the deer or the owls tonight. No, she was meeting someone who’d been igniting her thoughts for weeks—Jaxon Reed, a rugged forest ranger with a smirk that could melt steel and a body carved from the wilderness itself.
Lena leaned against a moss-covered boulder, her leather jacket unzipped just enough to reveal the curve of her collarbone, a deliberate tease. She heard the crunch of boots before she saw him, and her lips curled into a sly grin. 'Took you long enough, Ranger,' she called out, her voice a low, smoky challenge. 'Thought I’d have to start a fire to get your attention.'
Jaxon emerged from the shadows, his flannel shirt rolled up to expose forearms roped with muscle, his dark eyes glinting with mischief. 'Oh, darlin’, you’ve already got a blaze going,' he drawled, stepping closer, the air between them crackling. 'I’m just here to make sure it doesn’t get out of control.'
Lena laughed, sharp and unapologetic, pushing off the boulder to close the distance. 'Control? That’s not my style. I’m more of a ‘let it burn’ kind of woman.' She tilted her head, her gaze raking over him, bold and unyielding. 'Question is, can you keep up?'
Jaxon’s smirk widened, his hand brushing a stray lock of hair from her face, his touch lingering just long enough to send a shiver down her spine. 'Keep up? Hell, I’ll lead the charge. But don’t say I didn’t warn you—I play rough.'
'Good,' Lena shot back, her voice dripping with defiance. 'I don’t break easy.' She stepped even closer, her breath hot against his jaw as she murmured, 'So, what’s the plan, Ranger? You gonna show me the wild side of these woods, or are we just gonna stand here trading barbs all night?'
Jaxon’s eyes darkened, a predatory edge creeping into his grin. 'Oh, I’ve got plans, Lena. Plans that involve you sweating, panting, and begging for more.' He gripped her hip, pulling her flush against him, the heat of his body searing through her clothes. She could feel how hard he was already, pressing against her, and it made her pulse race with raw, unfiltered want.
'Big talk,' she taunted, her fingers curling into his shirt, her nails grazing his chest. 'Let’s see if that cock of yours can back it up.' Her words were a dare, her smirk a weapon, and she felt the growl rumble in his throat as his grip tightened.
They stumbled back against a tree, the bark rough against her jacket, but Lena didn’t care. She was too busy claiming his mouth, her kiss fierce and hungry, her tongue sparring with his as if this were a battle she intended to win. His hands roamed, sliding under her shirt, fingers digging into her skin, and she arched into him, her body already wet and aching for more. 'Fuck, you’re trouble,' he muttered against her lips, his voice rough with need.
'The best kind,' she retorted, nipping at his lower lip, her hand sliding down to grip him through his jeans, feeling just how much he wanted her. 'Now, are you gonna keep teasing, or are we gonna turn this forest into our playground?'
Jaxon’s laugh was low, dangerous, as he spun her around, pinning her against the tree, his breath hot on her neck. 'Oh, we’re just getting started, Lena. By the time I’m done, you’ll be dripping for me.'
And as the night deepened, the woods bore witness to a wildfire neither of them could—or wanted to—extinguish.
